His father, Dr. Melland was the half brother of Miss Melland, the wife of Prime Minister Mr. Asquith, from whom a message of sympathy had been received. Also attended Bowdon College. Listed as F. Bernard Melland on St. John's Mem, the Roll of Honour and the local newspaper. He landed at the Lancashire Landing, Cape Helles on the 25th April 1915 and the 15/06/1915 edition of the local newspaper reported that he had been wounded in Gallipoli and that he was currently in the Abbasseih Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt. He had been back at the front since September 1916. Both he and his brother, Brian Trevor Roper Melland enlisted together in early September 1914. Commissioned in the RNVR on the 29th September 1914. Frederick also died on Active Service and both are commemorated on the family gravestone in Hale Cem. Death reported in the 04/04/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Their father, Brian died in 1929 and their mother, Florence died in 1924. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1918. |
