Grandson of James Atkinson Longridge M.Inst. C.E. who invented the wine gum. Educated at the Grange, Folkstone, Malvern College & Sandhurst Military College.Officer Legion of Honour. As a Cadet at Sandhurst, he enlisted in the Royal West Surrey Rgt in 1895 and was drafted out to India in 1897, where he spent most of his military life. He was involved in the Boxer & Somalia Campaigns. In 1912, he was selected to asist Sir Beauchamp Duff at the India Office. In conjunction with his duties there, he bacame the Assistant Secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence. In September 1914, he gave up his appointment to join the Army in France as General Staff Officer (3rd Grade) of the Indian Contingent 1915. He was the recipient of 3 medals and was mentioned 4 times in dispatches. Eventually, in June 1916, he became Major & Brevet Lt-Colonel - CMG of the Indian Army and first General Staff Officer (1st Division British Expeditionary Force. Made a Companion of of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George. Included in the last birthday honours list. Death reported in the 29/08/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Local newspaper states that his parents were also of Torcross, Knightsbridge, South Devon. Married Lillian, the 3rd daughter of General Berkeley of the Indian Army - they had one young daughter. M.I. - "Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest". Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917. |
