Aged 27 years 4 months when he attested on the 8th February 1900.   He was
an unmarried labourer and had lived outside his family home for over 3
years.  He was 5 feet, 4 inches tall - 116 lb in weight - Sallow complexion
- grey eyes - brown hair and had a tattoo of a sailor on his left forearm. 
 His religion was given as Church of England.

He was drafted to South Africa on the 20th February 1900 and served at the
No. 5 General Hospital, Cape Town.   He returned to the UK on the 5th
October 1900 and was discharged at his own request on the 4th January 1901,
having accrued a total of 331 days service.   He was entitled to the QSA
Medal with a Cape Colony clasp.
