Born during the Mar Qtr 1924 at Basford R.D. - ref: 7b/500, the son of Albert & Edith Knight (nee Chambers). Travelling from Belfast, when just off St. Ann's Head, Milford Haven, H.M. Landing Craft Guns 15 & 16 capsized in heavy seas and 73 of their officers and men lost their lives. Many bodies were never recovered and some of those that were could not be identified. 28 of the 30 burials on the 30th April were navy and marines personnel from the two Landing Craft and 2 were from H.M.S. Rosemary that was sent to assist the L.C.Gs. He is commemorated on the Stretford Grammar School War Memorial (now lost), but is not listed in the Stretford WW2 Memorial Book held at Stretford Town Hall - he had presumably moved away from Stretford by the time of 2nd WW. |
