Attended Sale Central School and was a keen swimmer & cyclist. Employed as a Clerk in an Engineers Office. Served as an A.R.P. Messenger and was an ATC Cadet, before volunteering for service in the RAF. Volunteered for the RAF in August 1941 and in Januray 1942 was sent to the USA & Canada for trainingNav/Observer. F/O Kennedy won his D.F.C. (together with 2 others of that crew) for their outstanding actions during operations to Nürnberg the previous August - Gazetted on 5th October 1943 as reported in the 01/10/43 edition of the Sale & Stretford Guardian. The aircraft had been hit and was on fire - four of the crew of seven baled out and became POWs. The pilot, navigator and flight engineer stuck with the aircraft and managed to bring it back to the UK on only one engine. They crewed up with four new crew members and continued service with a raid over Berlin on new years eve 1943. Flying with 101 Sqn, with only three more ops to complete his tour of service, they took off at 0100hrs from R.A.F. Ludford Magna, Lincolnshire, in a Lancaster Mk.1 No. DV307SR-Z for ABC duties on an operation to Berlin. The aircraft was lost without trace and the 7 commonwealth members of the crew are commemorated at Runnymede, whilst the USAAF member is commemorated a the American cemetery & memorial at Cambridge. |
