Registered under the name of Illingsworth, he was born during the December quarter 1881 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/179, the eldest child of James William & Rachel Illingworth (nee Brownhill). He was baptised at St. John's P.C. Altrincham on the 15th February 1882. 1891 Census - No Trace. 1901 Census - Church Road, Ashton upon Mersey. Son - aged: 19 - occ: Agricultural Labourer - born: Timperley. Head of household - James Wiliam Illingworth Snr. - Married - aged: 52 - occ: Carter for Sheep Farmer - born: Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Also Rachel Illingworth - Wife - aged: 40 - occ: Charwoman (not domestic) - born: Timperley. Plus 8 younger siblings. Attended St. Martin's School, Ashton on Mersey. 1911 Census - 46 Bridgewater Road, Altrincham. Son - aged: 30 - occ: Waggoner on Farm - born: Timperley. Head of household - James Wiliam Illingworth Snr. - Married - aged: 52 - occ: Labourer at Council Sewerage Works - born: Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Also Rachel Illingworth - Wife - aged: 50 - occ: Labourer at Market Garden - born: Timperley. Plus 6 younger siblings. James Snr & Rachel produced 13 children, but had lost 4 of them. Member of the Broadheath Weslyan Church. Employed by Bucklow RDC Married Elizabeth Massey during the March quarter 1912 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/802. Enlisted in January 1915. MIC states that he was drafted to France on the 20th December 1915. This entitled him to the 15 Star (just), the BWM & the VM. The 13th Battalion, Cheshire Rgt were part of the 25th Division, 74th Brigade. On the 3rd July 1916, they travelled from Warloy to Bouzincourt and into the trenches at Boiselle on the 5th. Their positions were consolidated and held. They atacked Ovillers at 08.05 hrs on the 7th July. The objectives were reached and consolidated but at the high cost of 261 casualties - one of whom was James. John Potts from his church was in the same battalion and he was also killed in the same engagement. Listed as Jack on St. Alban's Vicar's typed list and J. on the Memorial. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917, which states that he was aged 37. |
