Born during the either the March quarter or the December quarter 1891 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/186 OR 8a/189, the son of George & Mary Holt (nee Brown). 1901 Census - Back Lane, Carrington. Son - aged: 9 - born: Carrington. Head of household - George Holt - Married - aged: 51 - occ: Labourer on Farm - born: Carrington. Also - Mary Holt - Wife - aged: 50 - born: Carrington. Plus 9 siblings. 1911 Census - Maypole Cottage, Carrington. Son - aged: 19 - occ: Carter at Corn Mill - born: Carrington. Head of household - George Holt - Married - aged: 61 - occ: Farm Labourer - born: Carrington. Also - Mary Holt - Wife - aged: 60 - born: Carrington. Plus 2 siblings and a niece. (S) = Short Service. Enlisted in the Plymouth Battalion MEF on the 6th February 1915. Received a bomb wound on his scalp on the 26th May 1915. Joined 2nd Royal Marine Battalion on the 16th August 1915. Received a bomb wound over his left eye on the 29th September 1915. Rejoined 2nd Royal Marine Battalion on the 8th October 1915. Transferred to 1st Royal Marine Battalion on the 28th April 1918. Received a GSW to his left foot on the 10th Novermber 1918 and was invalided back to the UK on the 15th November 1918. Awarded the Victory Medal, the BWM and the 1915 Star. M.I. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his Country". |
