His father died in 1915 - aged: 61.

I have no information as to when he enlisted, but the 7th Battalion,
Manchester Regiment first landed at 'V' Beach, Gallipoli, on the 7th May
1915, with the 127th Brigade, 42nd East Lancashire Division. On the 11th
May, the Battalion moved forward to the front lines through trenches and
gullies full of water. On the 4th June they advanced under a full moon
and dug in in front of the Turkish trenches, ready for what was to be later
known as the Third Battle of Krithia. At 08.00 hrs the bombandment
started and at 11.30 hrs, the Battalion attacked the trenches in front of
them. A & C Companies took the first trench, B & D Companies passed through
them and took the next trench. At this point the Battalion came under
heavy fire from the right and rear causing many casualties. All day long
the troops held the trench against tthe Turkish counter-attacks. The
Battalion was forced to abandon the forward position as the enfilading fire
reduced their numbers. Their withdrawal proved to be more costly than
their advance.

Commemorated on the family gravestone in Sale Cemetery - F.2045.
