Trafford

Born on the 26th May 1893 at Rosario de Santa Fe, Argentine Republic,  the
son of Arthur Frederick & Mary Elizabeth Halstead (nee King).  Both his
father and grandfather, Josua Halstead were Locomotive Engineers.   In 1888
his father was appointed Locomotive Superintendent and Permanent Way
Engineer of the Midland Railway of Uraguay and in 1891 a similar position
with the Cordoma and Rosario Railway, Argentine. Republic.  On returning to
England, he took up employment with Messrs. Beyer Peacock as Manager &
Secretary.

Scholar - born: Rosario de Santa Fe, Argentine Republic.    Head of
household - Arthur Frederick Halstead (Snr) - Married - aged: 50 - Manager
& Secretary of Locomotive & Machine Tool Works - born: Penistone,
Yorkshire.   Also - Mary Elizabeth Halstead - Wife - aged: 44 - born:
Salcombe, Devon.     Plus 1 younger sister, Florence Mary Halstead, aged:
14, born: Salcome, Devon.

Arthur (Jnr) was educated at Sale High School and Shrewsbury School.   An
articled pupil with the firm of Jones, Crewdson & Youatt, Chartered
Accountants, Manchester.    An enthusiastic sportsman - he won colours at
Shrewsbury School for running and for cricket.   Member of Liverpool
Ramblers, Brooklands C.C. and Gale Golf Club.

Enlisted in August 1914.

St. Anne's Memorial lists him as Arthur F. Halstead.   Sale Cenotaph as F.
Halstead    SDGW gives d.o.d. as 28/06/18.(but this was too late for
Gallipoli and is incorrect).

Death reported in the 13/07/1915 edition of the Altrincham Guardian, which
states that he was attd to the 1st Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1916, which states
that he was serving with the 1st Bn Dublin Fusiliers.

Commemorated in the De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour.   Of Sale, Cheshire,
M.I.Mech.E., A.C.I.S.   Born on the 26th May 1893 at Rosario de Sante Fe,

Accountants of Manchester.   Enlisted into the 8th Bn, Rifle Brigade on the
30th August 1914 and give a commission on the 1st November 1914, promoted
to Lieutenant on the 14th.   Killed during a counter-attack by the Turks on
the British Lines.  Buried in an unmarked grave on the west side of Saghir
(Dene) Mullah, Gallipoli.    His C.O. wrote to his father informing him
that his son had been sent out wit a Platoon to reinforce the left of their
line.  It was a dark night and they lost 10 officers killed and 1 wounded..
 The regiment was in the open and enveloped by Turks and it was due to the
gallantry of your son and other officers on that flak that a very serious
situation did not arise.

Commemorated on the family gravestone in Teighnmouth Cemetery, together
with the Salcome and Sale War Memorials.
