Born during the December quarter 1898 in the Barton on Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/708, the son of Noah & Mary Hodcroft (nee Dyas). 1901 Census - 3 Chapel Place, Stretford - Only his father is listed at this address - he is aged: 34 - occ: Perfumer's Assistant. No trace of his mother - Mary and the young Frederick. 1911 Census - 52 Mitford St Stretford. Son - aged: 12 - Scholar - born: Stretford. Head of Household - Noah Hodcroft (father) - Married - aged: 44 - occ: Chemist's Warehouseman - born: Stretford. Plus Mary Hodcroft (mother) - Wife - aged: 45 - born: Minderley, Shropshire. Frederick married Helena Carrollan during the June quarter 1939 in the Barton on Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/1624. 1939 National Registration - 32 Westwood Road, Stretford. Frederick N. Hodcroft- Married - born on the 9th September 1898 - occ: Gas Inspector (Refrigerator Works). Helena Hodcroft (Hodcroft crossed out and DOLAN inserted - she married Harold J. Dolan in 1949) - Married - born on the 5th October 1900 - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties. Mary Ann Carroll - Single - born on the 24th March 1893 - occ; Tailoress. Helena was also injured at 32 Westwood Road. Helena was born Helena Carroll during the June quarter 1898 in the Burnley R.D. - ref: 8e/212. Aged 45, residing at 52 Mitford Street, Stretford. Frederick, a gas works employee, was killed on the 7th October when an high explosive bomb dropped at 21.11 hrs on 32 Westwood Road, off Sevenways, Stretford. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Stretford Cemetery. His wife, Helena Hodcroft was also seriously injured in this incident. CWD Report No. 1. Died as a result of falling debris at 32 Westwood Road, Stretford, from where his body was recovered at 03.00 hrs on the 8th October 1941 and taken to the Church Street Mortuary, Stretford. His body was identified by a friend - J.E. O'Donaghue and released for burial to F. Gibbon, 138 Barton Road, Stretford. Described as being 5 feet 9 inches in height and having brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a black serge suit, a black waterproof coat marked 'S & DGB', black lace-up boots, and a steel helmet with 'G' marked on it ('FG' = Fire Guard???) Cemetery records state that he was a 42 year old Gas Works Employee. Buried 12/10/1940 - Burial No. 17,762. CWGC - Son of Noah Hodcroft, of 52 Mitford Street. Died at Westwood Road. |
