Born during the September quarter 1922 in the Barton on Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/1035, the son of John & Ethel Hoban (nee O'brien). He took off at 17.15 hrs from RAF Ludford Magna in a Lancaster Mk III bomber, No. DV230 SR-T for a bombing raid on Hanover. It is believed that the a/c was shot down by a German night fighter and crashed between Brelingen and Negenborn, 20 Km NNW of Hanover. The crew of nine all died in the crash and were initially buried at Brelingen, but at the end of hostilites was reburied at the Hanover War Cemetery, Niedersachsen. The ninth member of the crew was a "special equipment operator", presumably testing or operating something out of the ordinary at that time. |
