Born Charles Alan Worrall on the 8th September 1899, the birth being registered during the December quarter 1899 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/169, the son of Charles & Emma Holt (nee Worrall). Baptised at the Barkers Lane Wesleyan Chapel, Ashton upon Mersey on the 12th October 1899. 1901 Census - Comer Terrace, Ashton upon Mersey. Son - aged: 19 months - born: Ashton upon Mersey. Head of household - Charles Holt - Married - aged: 21 - occ: Stonemason's Labourer - born: Sale. Also - Emma Holt - Wife - aged: 19 - born: Ashton upon Mersey. Attended All Saints School, Ashton upon Mersey and the Sale District Central School, Ashfield Road, Sale. 1911 Census - 5 Heywood Grove, Ashton upon Mersey. Nephew - aged: 11 - Scholar - born: Ashton upon Mersey. Head of household - Charles Tole - Married - aged: 40 - occ: Compositor - born: Timperley. Also - Mary Ellen Tole - Wife - aged: 37 - born: Timperley. His parents were then residing at 48 Eaton Road, Sale. They now had two more children (Charles' siblings) born in 1902 and 1905. Also residing at this address was Emma's brother, wife and child. There would have been little room for Charles, so he moved in with his aunt and her husband whose name he eventually adopted hyphenated it with Holt. Chorister at St. Mary's Church, Ashton on Mersey. Employed for four years by Messrs. Price Allen & Co, Cotton Merchants, Manchester. His foster father (Charles Tole ???) was a well known bassoon player in the orchestra at the Altrincham Picture Theatre - also a skillful pianist. Nephew of Charles Tole, 9 Heywood Grove, Mersey Road, Ashton on Mersey. Enlisted in November 1917 Formerly 90384 - King's (Liverpool Rgt). Listed as C. Alan Holt-Tole on St, Mary's Memorial. Death reported in the 22/11/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Commemorated on his adopted father's gravestone in St. Martin's Churchyard. M.I. (St. Martin's) - "He died that we might live". M.I. (France) - "Let him be numbered with thy Saints. Glory everlasting". |
