Born during the December quarter 1884 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/173, the youngest son of William James & Mary Louisa Harter (nee Birley). They married in 1865 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. In 1875,the family funded the Mobberley Infants School built opposite their house. In 1881 William & Mary are residing at New Hall, Mobberley, next door to the Old Hall. William's occupation given as - J.P. (Justice of the Peace) and Merchant. They had 2 sons and 2 daughters, all born at Mobberley. They also had a Butler, Footman, a Cook and a Nurse. Herbert was baptised at Mobberley on the 30th December 1884 - son of William James & Mary Louisa Harter. The 1890 Voter's list for the Township of Mobberley lists William James Harter as residing at Tunbridge Wells, Kent. His electoral qualification is - "Freehold House & Land", namely Mobberley Hall. He is also recorded as a Voter in the Tunbridge Wells District, residing at 5 Neville Park, Tunbridge Wells. Ditto 1890, except that his abode is now - West Leigh, Artery (sic) Road, Wimbledon. Ditto 1891 and 1892 1891 Census - West Leigh, Arterberry Road, Wimbledon, Surrey. Apart from William J Harter, only the initials of all the other members of the family are recorded. Son (HH) aged: 6 - born: Mobberley. Head of household - William J. Harter - Married - aged: 55 - occ: Justice of the Peace - born: Eccles, Lancashire. Also Mary Louisa (ML) - Wife - aged: 48 - born: Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester. Plus 2 elder sisters born at Mobberley and 4 domestic servants. 1901 Census - Wellington College Master's House, Crowthorne, Berkshire. Pupil - aged: 16 - born: Kent. His parents are now residing at 3 The Drive, Wimbledon. William's occupation given as - Bank Director & J.P. His father - William James Harter died at Bern, Switzerland in 1905 - aged: 69. 1911 Census - No Trace. His widowed mother is now residing at the Chatsworth Hotel, Grand Parade, Eastbounre, Sussex. Attd the No.2 Machine Gun Company. Commemorated on a private plaque in S.S. Wilfred & Mary Church, Mobberley, which states that he was killed at Koekuit, near Ypres, Belgium. CWGC - Son of William James & Mary L. Harter of Harcourt Terrace, South Kensington, London. The 22/12/1917 edition of the Reading Mercury reports on a Memorial Service held at the Wellington College. The report includes a complete list of all the Wellington College Old boys lost during the War. He is also commemorated on St. Luke's P.C. War Memporial, Redcliffe Gardens, Kensington, London. |
