Born on the 12th August 1899, the birth registered during the September quarter 1899 in the Barton on Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/709, the younger son of John & Charlotte Mary Goodburn (nee Monkhouse). 1901 Census - 41 Lonsdale Street, Stretford. Son - aged: 1 - born: Stretford. Head of household - John Goodburn - Married - aged: 32 - occ: County Court Bailiff - born: Liverpool. Also Charlotte M. Goodburn - Wife - aged: 34 - born: Salford. Plus 2 siblings and 2 other family members. 1911 Census - 3 Gardon Street, Lower Broughton, Salford. Grandson - aged: 11 - Scholar - born: Stretford. Head of household - Margaret Goodburn - Widow - aged: 74 - born: Ulverston, Lancashire. Also his father (son of Margaret) - John Goodburn - Married - aged: 42 - occ: Clerk at County Court - born: Liverpool. Plus his elder brother John. In 1911, His mother and two sisters were residing at 3 Harcourt Street, Gorse Hill. Listed as Head of household under the name of Mrs. Goodburn - Married - aged: 42 - occ: Monthly Nurse - born: Salford. Plus his two sisters - Florrence Goodburn - aged: 16 - occ: Coil Winder at Electrical Works and Ida Goodburn - aged: 9. Charlotte had been married for 18 years and produced 5 children. Florence, John, Minnie (d.1898) and Reginald. Employed as an Assistant Buyer at Messrs. Herbert Whitworth Ltd, 115 Princess Street, Manchester. W.O.363 - Enlisted into the 16th Bn. of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Manchester on the 7th January 1915 stating that he was aged 19 years and 5 months. (In fact, he was born on 12 August 1899 and so was only 15 years and 4 months of age}. His address was given as 8 St. Hildas Road, Old Trafford and his occupation that of Student. His height was recorded as 5 feet 9½ inches - chest 36/39 inches with 3 inch expansion - weight 154 lb and of good physical development. Promoted to Sergeant on the 16th April 1915, at age 15 years, 8 months and 5 days old. When his true age was discovered he was discharged from the Army on the 19th November 1915, under King's Regulation 392 (vi) "Having made a mis-statement as to age on enlistment" (remarkably, he got away with it for nearly 2 years !!!). On reaching the age of 18 years he was given a Cadetship in the R.A.F. and sent first sent to 1 Officer Cadet Wing on the 27th October 1917. Next he was sent to No.5 School of Military Aeronautics at Denham on the 5th January 1918 and then onto 68 Training Sqn at Stoke Denham. on the 10th March 1918. Drafted to 19th Wing on the 13th May 1918 and into 120 Sqn at Cramlington and then onto 52 Training Sqn at Catterick. According to his relative Stuart Jones' website - see http://www.3caonline.com/2nd-lieutenant-reginald-i-goodburn-1899-1918/ Reggie was flying a RE8 aircraft (C2394) at the time. He was making a flat turn in the aircraft at 100 feet when he nose-dived and crashed to his death. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on the 1st April 1918. He was on his last course prior to going to the front when he was killed in a flying accident at the Aerodrome, Newcastle upon Tyne. Buried 13/08/1918 - Burial No. 8,363. At the time of his death, his elder brother - Captain J. Goodburn M.G.C. was a POW in Germany. His death was reported in the 13th August 1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. His mother's address at Ashton on Mersey has been crossed out on his RAF record and substituted with 140 Wellington Road, Rhyl, North Wales. His father, John died 17/08/1934 aged 66 years and his mother, Charlotte Mary died 05/12/1936 aged 71 years. |
