Born on the 12th April 1888, the birth being registered during the June quarter 1888 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/178, the 4th son of Henry Adams & Elizabeth Gray (nee Hampson). His paternal grandfather died when his father was only three years of age, but the family continued to reside on his grandfather's farm in Leicestershire. In the mid-1870s his father moved from Leicestershire over to Ashton upon Mersey. It was here that he met Elizabeth Hampson, the sister of Thomas Hampson who ran a Grocer's shop on Cross Street. He married Elizabeth in 1877. 1891 Census - School Road, Sale. Son - aged: 2 - Scholar - born: Cheshire. Head of household - Henry A. Gray - Married - aged: 37 - occ: Grocer - born: Leicester. Also Elizabeth Gray - Wife - aged: 38 - born: Altrincham. Plus - 6 siblings, including Thomas William who was also killed during WW1. and 1 domestic servant. 1901 Census - 24 School Road, Sale. Son - aged: 12 - occ: Grocer's Assistant - born: Ashton upon Mersey. Head of household - Henry A. Gray - Married - aged: 47 - occ: Grocer Shopkeeper - born: Leicester. Also Elizabeth Gray - Wife - aged: 50 - born: Altrincham. Plus - 8 siblings, , including Thomas William & Percy who were also killed during WW1. 1911 Census - 58 School Road, Sale. Son (listed as William Gray) - Son - aged: 22 - occ: Grocer's Assistant - born: Ashton upon Mersey. Head of household - Henry A. Gray - Married - aged: 57 - occ: Grocer Shopkeeper - born: Leicester. Also Elizabeth Gray - Wife - aged: 61 - born: Altrincham. Plus - 8 siblings, including Thomas William & Percy who were also killed during WW1. His mother - Elizabeth Gray, died on 04/07/1914 aged 65. During the course of his training, his hearing was affected after he developed chronic oitis media. Granted a service pension, he was discharged from the Army and returned to resume work in the family business. He died of Pneumonia following Influenza. His death being reported in the 04/03/1919 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Commemorated on the private family gravestone in St. Martin's Ref: 5b.47. M. Post War, his father Henry Adams resided at 109 Holmfield Rd, Glynn Estate, Blackpool, he died 06/02/1934 aged 80. |
