Born during the March quarter 1898 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/699, the son of Thomas Clough & Elizabeth Giblin (nee Foster). 1901 Census - 32 Toyford Place, Stretford. Son - aged: 3 - born: Stretford. Head of household - Thomas Giblin - Married - aged: 25 - occ: Carter - born: Stretford. Also - Elizabeth Giblin - Wife - aged: 24 - born: Stretford. Plus 1 younger sister. 1911 Census - 19 Leslie Street, Stretford. Son - aged: 13 - Scholar - born: Stretford. Head of household - Thomas Giblin - Married - aged: 35 - occ: Carter General - born: Stretford. Also - Elizabeth Giblin - Wife - aged: 33 - born: Stretford. Plus 1 younger brother. The 1/7th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers were part of the 125th Brigade, 42nd (East Lancashire) Division. The sailed for Gallipoli on the 1st May 1915 and landed at "W" Beach on the 5th. Involved in much of the fighting May - July. On the 4th August 1915, they moved into the Redoubt Line and on the 7th into the front line at Krithia Road and attacked The Vineyard. Objectives were taken but they were subjected to numerous counter-attacks. George was killed during that offensive. Pension Records - Dependent - Mrs. Elizabeth Giblin (Mother) 18 Albion Street, Sale. This has been crossed out and 18 Poplar Grove Substituted. A Pension of 3/- per week awarded w.e.f. the 4th April 1917, increasing to 3/6d w.e.f. the 1st September 1917. This was increased again to 5/- per week w.e.f. the 6th November 1918. Post War his parents resided at 18 Albion Street, Sale. |
