Alexander was an Air Raid Warden on duty in Sandy Lane and was killed by a
bomb, probably jettisoned by an enemy plane passing over from the raid on
Manchester that night - the fourth largest raid on Manchester during WW2.
Ironically he was killed just as he was entering an Air Raid Shelter.

The old school on Sandy Lane has now gone, there is a row of houses there
now. There were two air-raid shelters across the road from the school,
where the chippy car park was.

Information received from Warrington LSL.........The Warrington Guardian of
the 18th January 1941 has a death notice and obituary for him,
unfortunately the quality of the original paper was too poor to permit a
legible copy. The obituary and death notice merely say that his death was
sudden, and there was no report on any bombing raid. However, the M.I. on
his gravestone definitely states that he “was killed at his post by enemy
action on the 9th January 1941".

Buried 14/01/1941 - Burial No. 10,801. M.I. - "His memory is ours to
cherish". His wife died 27/07/1985 aged 80 years.

CWGC - Air Raid Warden. Son of Philip and Madeline Hazelhurst Grice, of
Fedw Cottage, Carrog, North Wales; husband of Norah Grice, of 94 Burford
Lane. Died at Sandy Lane Public Shelter.
