the eldest son of William & Margaret Gaitskell.

1891 Census - Albion Street, Whitehaven.   Son - aged: 8 - Scholar - born:
Whitehaven.  Head of household - William Gaitskell - Married - aged: 35 -
occ: Iron Ship & Caulker - born: Whitehaven.   Also - Margaret Gaitskell -
Wife - aged: 32 - born: Whitehaven.  Plus 2 younger brothers.

1901 Census - 5 Mill Street, Whitehaven.   Son - aged: 18 - occ: Apprentice
Fitter - born: Whitehaven.  Hewads of household - Margaret Gaitskell -
Married - aged: 42 - born: Whitehaven.  Plus 2 younger brothers.  His
father was residing at 21 Manchester Street, Barrow in Furness as a 44 year
old Iron Ship Caulker.

1911 Census - No Trace.

Married Gwladys Williams during the December quaerter 1926 in the Barton
upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/891.

1939 National Registration - No Trace - in Merchant Navy ?  His wife -
Gwladys Gaitskell was residing at 115 Gill Bent Road, Cheadle & Gatley.  
Gwladys Gaitskell - Married - born: 22nd November 1898.   She was residing
with John P. & Jane Williams.   There was one redacted record after
Gwladys.

The "Manchester Regiment" was built in 1922, its gross register tonnage was
5,989, it was 450 feet long, 58 feet wide and could make 14.5 knots. It was
one of 13 ships operated by Manchester Liners Ltd, St. Anne's Square,
Manchester 2.
On the 04/12/39 whilst in convoy, she collided with S.S. Oropesa (sunk
later in the war) and sank 150 miles SW of Cape Race.     There were 63
survivors, but 9 crew were lost.
