Born during the December quarter 1922 in the Leigh R.D. - ref: 8c/396, the son of George & Nellie Gatley (nee Holding). Commemorated on the private family gravestone in St. Catherine's, Dumplington. Ref: 3a28 & A6. This states that he was a Pilot Officer. M.I. - "Greater love hath no man". Italian M.I. - "He slipped the Bonds of Earth and Danced the Skies on Laughter's Wings" 242 Squadron flew Hawker Hurricane a/c January 1940 to February 1942, thereafter - Supermarine Spitfire a/c. In October 1942, the Sqn was deployed to North Africa, defending Algiers. It moved to take part in the invasion of Sicily. |
