The Solon was built in 1925, it's gross register tonnage was 4,550, it was 400 feet long, 53 feet wide and could make 10 knots. A cargo ship, it was one of 11 ships operated by the Compagnie De Navigation D'Orbigny, 81 Rue Taitbout, Paris. On the 17/07/40 it was seized at Swansea and became a British - Ministry of War Transport Vessel - Solon II. Off the coast of Giuana, whilst Travelling from Turkey to the U.K., on the 03/12/42 she was torpedoed by U-508 and sank in position - 07.45N 56.30W. There were 8 survivors, but 75 crew/passengers were lost. |
