Born during the March quarter 1894 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/697, the youngest son of James & Alice Gratrix (nee Richardson). 1901 Census - Woods End Farm, Woods End Road, Flixton. Son - aged: 7 - born: Davyhulme. Head of household - James Gratrix - Married - aged: 50 - occ: Basket Manufacturer - born: Eccles. Also - Alice Gratrix - Wife - aged: 45 - born: Flixton. Plus 8 elder siblings. 1911 Census - Union Farm, Woodsend Road, Flixton. Son - aged:17 - occ: Clerk - born: Davyhulme. Head of household - James Gratrix - Married - aged: 60 - occ: Basket Manufacturer - born: Eccles. Also - Alice Gratrix - Wife - aged: 56 - born: Flixton. Plus 6 elder siblings. WO363 - Enlisted at Manchester on the 4th September 1914. He was then aged: 20 years 7 months and employed as a Clerk. He was 5 feet 7 3/4 inches in height and weighed 116 lb. Chest measurements of 31 - 33 1/2 inches. He had dark complexion, black hair and blue eyes and recorded as a Wesleyan. He served at Home from the 4th September 1914 to the 7th November 1915.
