H.M.S. Penelope was torpedoed at 07.30hrs on 18/02/44, 35 miles west of Naples, by 'U.410', in position 40.55N 13.25E. It sank 10 minutes later following an explosion in the after magazine. - 250 men were rescued. It was an 'Arethusa' class light cruiser, of which 4 were built between 1934 & 1937, they had a displacement of 5,250 tons and a complement of 450 personnel. B.Sc.Eng. (Manchester). Joined the Metro-Vicker's Company as a Vacation Apprentice in August 1937 and returned as a College Apprentice in October 1939. Joined the RNVR as a Sub-Lieutenant (E) in November 1939 and served in H.M. Ships, Pembroke, President, Dauntless & Penelope. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (E) in 1943. Reported missing, presumed killed in action at sea in February 1944. |
