Son of William Ellerton Ryan & Janetta Margaret Elizabeth Fry, Somerset West, Cape Province, South Africa. B.Sc (Hons) London. Joined the Metro-Vicker's Company as a Probationary College Apprentice in January 1935 and returned as a College Apprentice in October 1938. Joined the RAFVR in which he held the rank of Pilot Officer and was mobilised in September 1939. Later promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant. Awarded the D.F.C. in December 1940 for "gallantry and devotion to duty in the execution of air operations". KinA whilst on air operations in April 1941.
