Attended Sale High School and Manchester Grammar School. A keen boy scout, he attended the last World Scout Jamboree as the King's Scout. Keen at swimming and athletics. He made one voyage with the Merchant Navy in 1938, but then entered an insurance company office. Entered Dartmouth Naval College in 1939 and received his commision in 1940. His first engagement was at Dakar, before volunteering for submarines. H.M.S. Regent, which had sailed from Malta in mid-April heading for the southern Adriatic Sea was presumed lost sometime during early May 1943. Before his death, his father was the Golf Pro at the Sale Golf Club. |
