Born at Sale on the 27th May 1886, the birth being registered during the September quarter 1886 nin the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/184, the son of Edwin & Mary Elding. 1891 Census - 154 Northenden Road, Sale. Son - aged: 4 - Scholar - born: Sale. Head of household - Edwin Elding - Married - aged: 64 - occ: Traveller - born: Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire. Also Mary Elding - Wife - aged: 42 - born: Aberdeen, Scotland. Plus 9 siblings, including Charles who was also killed during WW1. His father - Edwin Elding died in 1896, aged: 70. 1901 Census - The Royal Commercial Travellers' School for Orphan & Necessitous Children, Pinner, Middlesex. Pupil - aged: 14 - born: Sale. 1911 Census - 38 Whitelow Road, Chorlton, Manchester. Son - aged: 24 - occ: Assistant Salesman - born: Sale. Head of household - Mary Elding - Widow - aged: 63 - born: Aberdeen, Scotland. Plus 4 siblings. Enlisted at Port Arthur, Canada, on the 25th March 1915. He was already serving in the 96th L.D.R. and had previously served for 3 years in the East Lancashire Territorial Transport & Supply. At the time of his enlistment, he was 28 years of age, he was 5 feet 4½ inches in height, with a chest measurement of 35/3 inches. His complexion was - Dark, Eyes - Grey, Hair - Brown. He was unmarried and was listed as a Baptist. He had no distinguishing marks. Commemorated on the family gravestone in Sale Cemetery - E.1660. His brother, Charles Elding, also died on active service. |
