Born on the 7th May 1909, the birth being registered during the June quarter 1909 in the Aston (Warwickshire) R.D. - ref: 6d/385, the daughter of Isaac & Ellen Elwell (nee nicholls). 1911 Census - 15 Globe Square, Dukinfield. Daughter - aged: 1 - born: Stalybridge. Head of household - Isaac Elwelll - Married - aged: 33 - occ:Canal Boatman - born: Staffordshire. Also Ellen Elwell - Wife - aged: 31 - born - Staffordshire. Plus 4 siblings. 1939 National Registration - 133 Clifton Street, Old Trafford. George Ridd - Widower - born: 1st June 1874 - occ: Tailor (Retired). Kathleen G. Ridd - Single - born: 23rd July 1910 - occ: Secretary with General Merchant. Ellen Elwell - Single - born: 7th May 1909 - occ: Housekeeper. Death registered in Stretford Borough. Killed due to the explosion of a Land Mine. No CWD exists. I suspect that Ellen is one of the Unidentified bodies buried in the Communal Grave in Stretford Cemetery. CWGC - of 133 Clifton Street, Old Trafford. Daughter of Isaac Elwell. Died at 133 Clifton Street. Story related in 2004 by Julie Wickham - We were lucky because a parachute mine had landed at the end of Clifton Street and several houses had collapsed into the cellars, including our previous house, 61. It was never rebuilt and the site is now part of the playing field for a new school, built after the war. NOT COMMEMORATED IN THE STRETFORD WW2 MEMORIAL BOOK. |
