Born during the June quarter 1893 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/179, the only son of James Morley & Alice Annie Eaton (nee Willcox). 1901 census - Sandy Mount, Bank Hall Lane, Hale. Son - aged: 9 - born: Northenden, Manchester. Head of household - James M. Eaton - Married - aged: 43 - occ: Cotton Goods Merchant - born: Burnage. Also - Alice A. Eaton - Wife - aged: 38 - born: Manchester. Plus - 3 sisters and 2 domestic servants. 1911 Census - Sandy Mount, Bank Hall Lane, Hale. Son - aged: 19 - occ: Salesman with Cotton Goods Merchant - born: Sharston, Manchester. Head of household - James M. Eaton - Married - aged: 53 - occ: Cotton Goods Merchant - born: Burnage. Also - Alice A. Eaton - Wife - aged: 48 - born: Manchester. Plus - 2 sisters and 2 domestic servants. One of his sisters had died. Educated at Ackworth School, Pontefract and at the Bowdon College. MIC - Commissioned in the 20th Bn Manchester Rgt (5th City) in November 1914 and drafted to the front on the 18th February 1916. Serving with the 22nd Brigade, 7th Division the Bn attacked to the right of Fricourt south-east of Bois Francais-Mametz Becordel Road at 14.300 hrs on the 1st July. The Bn suffered high casualties during the advance on Sunken Road Trench with 110 killed, 29 missing and 171 wounded. He was killed whilst leading his men, though wounded twice, he still fought on with just his revolver, until he eventuially fell mortally wounded. Death reported in the 14/07/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Probate awarded at London 20th November 1916 to James Morley Eaton (Father), Merchant - £1,093. 17. 8d. Listed on Hale Cenotaph, as being with the 16th Bn. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917. |
