Born during the March quarter 1890 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/182,
the son of William & Kate Harriett (Kate) Davenport.

1891 Census - 15 Oakfield Road, Altrincham.     [Family all wrongly listed
as DEVENPORT]  Son - listed as Herbert Devenport - aged: 1 - born:
Altrincham.    Head of household - William Devenport - Married - aged: 31 -
occ: Cab Driver - born: Altrincham.   Also - Harriet Devenport - Wife -
aged: 28 - born: Nottingham.    Plus 3 siblings and 1 visitor.

1901 Census - 15 Oakfield Road, Altrincham.    Son - aged: 10 - born:
Altrincham.    Head of household - William Davenport - Married - aged: 40 -
occ: Coachman (Domestic) - born: Altrincham.   Also - Harriet - Wife -
aged: 36 - occ: Charwoman (Domestic) - born: Altrincham.  Plus 6 siblings
including his brothers - William & Henry (Harry) Davenport, who were also
killed during WW1.

Attended St. George's Church of England School.

1911 Census - 15 Oakfield Road, Altrincham.    Son - listed as Harry
Davonport - aged: 17 - occ: Brickmaker, born: Altrincham.     Head of
household - Kate Harriet Davonport - Wife - aged: 45 - born: Nottingham.  
Plus - 2 siblings.   His father - William - Married - aged: 52 - occ:
Ostler - was a patient in the Bucklow Workhouse, Knutsford.  He died in
1912, aged: 54.

Employed for 10 years by Mr. Sydney Drake, Ellenbrook, Brooklands.     The
18/09/1917 edition of the local newspaper states that he was employed as a
moulder by Westinghouse Ltd, Trafford Park.   There is an H. Devonport
(which I cannot trace) commemorated on the Metro-Vics Memorial - this could
well be Herbert ???

Enlisted in December 1915.

He had twice been invalided home with Trench Foot and Enteric Fever and had
finally returned to the front in July 1917.

Death reported in the 14/09/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.   See
also the 18/09/1917 edition of the local newspaper.

M.I. - "Beyond recall, forever in our thoughts".

His sister - Mrs. Yould lived at 1 Currans Cottage, Orford, Warrrington.  
He left a widow and little daughter [I have not been able to establish who
he married].

Their mother, Kate H. Davenport died 25/08/1928 aged 65.

His brothers Charles William & Henry (Harry) Davenport also died on Active
Service.   His other brother John Davenport, a Captain in the Lancashire
Fusiliers also served, but survived the war.   All three are commemorated
on William's CWGC headstone at Altrincham Cemetery.

Spelt Davonport in the Roll of Honour.
