This could be one of two brothers - Frederick James Denny or Frank Denny - I believe it to be Frank Denny. I am inclined to go with Frank as both the CWGC and St. Bride's P.C. War Memorial only list the one initial - 'F' - no mention of a 'J' in his name. The CWGC also states that he was 20 years of age when he was killed. Frederick James Denny was born during the June quarter 1893 in the Salford R.D. - ref: 8d/183. His younger brother - Frank Denny was born during the December quarter 1894 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/719. They were the sons of James Henry & Elizabeth Denny (nee Derbyshire). Frank was born on the 6th September 1894 at 22 Ayr Street. He was baptised at St. Bartholomew P.C., Salford on the 17th October 1894. His father's occupation given as a Lurry Driver. Frederick James was born on the 30th April 1893 also at 22 Ayr Street. He was baptised at St. Bartholomew P.C. Salford on the 2nd July 1893. 1901 Census - 112 Tamworth Street, Chorlton, Manchester. Son - 6 - born: Stretford. Head of household - James H. Denny - Married - aged: 32 - occ: Railway Carter - born: Manchester. Also - Elizabeth Denny - Wife - aged: 31 - born: Salford. Plus 4 siblings, including his elder brother - Frederick James - aged: 8 - born: Salford. My opinion of which brother this commemorates changed when I got to the 1911 Census, with Frederick's occupation of 'Waiter', being conducive to him serving as a 2nd Steward on the S.S. Manchester Commerce. However this is not conclusive and my choice may well be wrong. 1911 Census - 21 Hamilton Street, Old Trafford. Son - aged: 16 - occ: Clerk - born: Stretford. Head of household - James Henry Denny - Married - aged: 42 - occ: Carter - born: Manchester. Also - Elizabeth Denny - Wife - aged: 41 - born: Salford. Plus 5 siblings, including his elder brother - Frederick James -.aged: 17 - occ: Waiter - born: Salford. Frederick James married - Annie Dick during the December quarter 1915 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/1275. I believe he died in 1960, aged: 67, another reason for choosing Frank. Annie I believe died in 1952, aged: 62. CWGC - Born at Gorton, Manchester (according to the CWGC) I believe this to be incorrect. The S.S. Manchester Commerce was a 5,363 grt Merchant ship, owned by Manchester Liners Ltd and was outward bound for Quebec City, Canada. When 20 miles north-east from Tory Island Co. Donegal, she was mined and sunk with the loss of 14 lives, including the Captain - the first British ship to be sunk by a mine during WW1. |
