Born during the September quarter 1897 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/191, the son of Samuel & Mary Ann Dean (nee Ardern). 1901 Census - "Washway Cottages", Manchester Road, Timperley. Son - aged: 3 - born: Altrincham. Head of household - Samuel Dean - Married - aged: 28 - occ: Groom (Domestic) - born: Stretford. Also Mary Ann Dean - Wife - aged: 29 - born: Stretford. Plus 2 sisters. 1911 Census - 72 Lacy Street, Stretford. Son - aged: 14 - Scholar - born: Altrincham. Head of household - Samuel Dean - Married - aged: 39 - occ: General Labourer at Electrical Engineers - born: Stretford. Also Mary Ann Dean - Wife - aged: 40 - born: Stretford. Plus 5 younger siblings MIC - states that he was posted to France on the 29th September 1915, thereby qualifying for the 15 Star, the BWM and the VM. No WO363. The 8th Bn, South Lancashire Rgt served in the 25th Division, 75 Brigade. John was killed in action on the 3rd day of the Battle of the Somme 1916. 75 Brigade were attacking La Boiselle and Ovillers from the south-west along Mash Valley. With No Man's Land being over 800 metres at this point, the British had already sustained 5,000 casualties trying to take this objective on the 1st July. They were to sustain another 2,500 on the 3rd, one of whom was John. M.I. - "Dearer to Memory than words can tell, are the thoughts of a son we knew so well". |
