Born during the June quarter 1895 in the Northwich R.D. - ref: 8a/254, the eldest son of William & Margaret Annie Clare (nee Millington). Birth registered in the name of George Arthur Clare. 1901 Census - 70 Witton Street, Northwich, Cheshire. Grandson - aged: 6 - born: Northwich. Head of household - George E. Stelfox - Married - aged: 60 - occ: Tailor (Cloth) - born: Northwich. Also - Mary E. Stelfox - Wife (maternal grandmother) - aged: 54 - born: Northwich. Plus 3 sons (Uncles). [Mary E. Stelfox was Mary Ellen Clare before her marriage to George]. No trace of his parents at this time. His mother - Margaret Annie Clare, died in 1906, aged: 37. 1911 Census - Hope Road, Sale. Listed as George Arthur Clare. Son - aged: 16 - occ: Grocer - born: Northwich, Cheshire. Head of household - William Clare - Married - aged: 42 - occ: Shipwright - born: Northwich. Also - Matilda Clare - Wife - aged: 35 - born: Mobberley, Cheshire. Plus his younger brother - Ralph Reginald Clare - aged: 4 - born: Sale. Employed by Messrs. T. Royle & Sons, School Road, Sale. Attended St. Anne's School and later became a member of St. Anne's Christian Brotherhood. WO363 - Attested at Chester from 6 Hope Road, Sale on the 29th November 1915, aged: 20 years 286 days. Mobilised into the 3rd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment on the 27th January 1916. Height: 5 feet 7¾ inches - Weight: 115½ lb - Expanded chest: 35 inches with a 3 inch expansion. Drafted to France on the 20th October 1916 and to the No.4 I.B.D. (Infantry Base Depot) at Rouen and into the 10th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment on the 22nd. Qualified as a Bomber, he was sent forward into the field on the 5th November 1916 Admitted into the 75 Field Ambulance on the 26th April 1917 suffering with a septic leg. Admitted to 76 Field Ambulance with I.C.T. (Inflammation of the Connective Tissue) of right leg and foot ["Trench Fever or Foot"] on the 13th May 1917 - discharged on the 25th. By 1919 his mother had died and there was only his father and his 13 year old brother - Reggie (Ralph Reginald) Clare at home MIC - BWM & Victory only - no other info. Killed instantly by a shell. Death reported in the 27/07/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. The 1915 Sale Directory lists - William Clare - Shipwright. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1918.
