Born during the June quarter 1896 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/179, the
son of Alfred & Sarah Ann Chapman (nee Watkinson).

1901 Census - 63 Egerton Street, Sale.   Son - aged: 5 - born: Sale.   Head
of household - Alfred Chapman Snr. - Married - aged: 30 - occ: General
Labourer - born: Sale.    Also Sarah Ann Chapman - Wife - aged: 29 - born:
Timperley.    Plus 3 siblings. 

1911 Census - T.S. Clio, Menai Straits, Bangor, Llandegfan, Anglesey.  
Inmate - aged: 15  - occ: School and Other Instructions - born: Sale.  
[T.S. Clio was a Training Ship moored in the Menai Straits, Wales.   It was
financed by Local Poor Law Bodies and provided  care and training for 260
homeless, destitute and poor respectable boys aged 12 to 16, mostly from
London, Liverpool and Manchester.  Discipline aboard ships like the Clio
was strict and the birch used to enforce it.  A local Anglesey historian
Emrys Rhys Roberts has written a book about the Clio].

His parents were residing at 5 Hyde Grove, Sale - Alfred Chapman Snr - Head
- Married - aged 39 - occ: Coal Labourer - born: Sale.    Also - Sarah Ann
Chapman - Wife - aged: 38 - born: Timperley.   Plus 8 children (Alfred
Jnr's siblings).

WO363 - Enlisted at Altrincham from 59 Egerton Street, Sale on the 2nd
September 1914, aged: 19 years 179 days.  Employed as a Plater at the
Westinghouse Co., Trafford Park.     Height: 5 feet 5 inches - Weight: 125
lb - Expanded chest: 34 inches with a 2 inch expansion - Church of England.
  Posted to the 11th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment on the 18th September
1914.   Embarked at Southampton for France on the 25th September 1915.  
For reasons not given on the part of his record that has survived, he was
given 7 days Field Punishment No.1 in the field on the 9th October 1915
(this comprised being tied crucifix, to the wheel of a cart or similar for
two hours each day).  Buried in the Lancashire Cottage Cemetery.

Sale Evangelical Church Newsletter - June 2009.   In 1901 the family were
residing at Egerton Street, Sale, but by 1915 at Hyde Grove.    His father
was born at Sale during the Mar Qtr 1871 and his mother at Timperley during
the Jun Qtr 1874.   Before the war, Alfred was an apprentice at
Westinghouse Co, Trafford Park.   He enlisted on the 2nd September 1914
into the 11th Bn Cheshire Rgt and was posted on the 18th September.

MIC - Drafted to France on the 25th September 1915.    BWM - 15 star &
Victory.

Only three men from the 11th Bn killed on the 8th November - trench wastage
?   The Bn was not involved in the second Battle of Ypres.

By 1919, his family comprised:- Albert & Sarah (parents).  Siblings:- Sarah
Ellen (24) - Arthur (20) - Stanley (18) - Dorothy (13) - Mabel (12) -
Herbert (7), all residing at 5 Hyde Grove, Sale.
