Born during the June quarter 1914 in the Wirral R.D. - ref: 8a/823, the son
of Robert & Sarah Calveley (nee Smith).   His father was a Boot Repairer
and in 1911 the family resided at Sandy Lane, Heswell cum Oldfield,
Cheshire.

Samuel was a Police Constable in the Altrincham District, being appointed
on the 19th July 1937.

Married Alice Williams in Christ Church, Higher Bebbington, Wirral during
the September quarter 1939 in the Wirral R.D. - ref: 8a/1843.  They had a
son - John G. Calveley, born in 1943.

Duties.

During the Italian Campaign the 2nd Bn King's (Liverpool) Rgt fought a
brief but savage engagement at a small hill-top village called San Leolino
which is situated around 25 Km west of Arezzo, south-east of Florence. 
They were pitched against the Herman Goering Panzer-Parachute Regiment
notorious for its brutality.   During the past weeks they had terrorised
the local inhabitants and killed between 250 and 300 innocent men, women
and children.   They were planning on destroying the village itself to
block the Allied advance when the Liverpool Rgt attacked them.

M.I. "We who loved you will never forget those happy days together.  Loving

Commemorated on the Cheshire Constabulary War Memorial and in their War
Memorial Book.

His widow married Leslie Ashton in 1947 in the Bucklow R.D.
