Born during the September quarter 1891 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/169, the son of William & Martha Hannah Cooper (nee Allman). In 1891, His parents were residing at Moss Lane, Timpelrey which is probably where William (Jnr) was born. 1901 Census - Skeltons Junction, Timperley. Son - aged: 10 - born: Timperley. Head of household - William Cooper - Widower - aged: 39 - occ: Market Gardener - born: Altrincham. Plus 4 siblings and 1 domestic servant. 1911 Census - 10 Russell Street, Altrincham. Boarder, residing with the Snape family - aged: 20 - occ: Cane Porter - born: Timperley. Member of the Altrincham P.S.A. Married Gertrude Bowyer during the December quarter 1912 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/289. Local newspaper states that he was "mobilised" at the outbreak of war indicating that he was already a Territorial Soldier. Drafted to the front in February 1915. Serving in the Transport Service, he was killed by a shell. Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Hale Cem, which states that he was 26 years of age. The local newspaper states that his widow lived at Burgess Place, New St, Altrincham and that he was aged 27. M.I. - "Ever remembered by all". (Hale Cemetery) M.I. - "He liveth forever in ou=r thoughts. His loving wife and son Arthur". (Bancourt Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France) His father, William died 06/09/1940 aged 79 years and his mother, ???Mary Ann Cooper??? father re-married??? died 02/05/1938. His brother, Arthur also died on active service. Left a widow and young son. (Arthur Cooper) |
