Whilst serving in France, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the 1st Bn. Buck's - Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry on the 15th September 1917. There are four medical reports on his file, one dated the 7th July and two dated the 8th July 1920, all saying the same thing in that he is suffering from acute Neurasthenia and mental depression brought on by his war service and that he is unable to work. One was from a Harley Street Consultant another from the Medico-Psychological Clinic, 30 - 34 Brunswick Square London WC1. where he was an in-patient at that time. Died at Hale Barns, Cheshire. Buried 13/11/20 - Burial No. 4,540. A fourth medical certificate dated 12th July 1920 was from - Harcourt House, Cavendish Square, London W1 - "This is to certify that I saw and examined Frederick Arthur John Corfield of 35 Avonmore Road, West Kensington on the 17th June 1920 and found him to be depressed and incapable of following his pre-war occupation of Sanitary Surveyor. I examined the history of origin of his malady very carefully and came to the conclusion that it is directly dependent on war strain and Army conditions in Italy, France and Egypt. The final exciting cause appears to have been the responsibility thrown upon him during a staff appointment in Egypt 1919. It is, therefore, my opinion that his depression and incapacity are directly due to the war. Signed W.N.B. Stoddart M.D., F.R.C.P., Hon. Consulting Physician in Mental Diseases to St. Thomas's Hospital; Examiner in Psychology and Mental Diseases to the University of London; Author of "Mind & Its Disorders". He committed suicide - his death certificate states that on the 9th October 1920 in a field at Higher Mainwood Farm, Ringway he shot himself with a gun, whilst of unsound mind and died from Vagal shock and Haemorrhage - he was then aged 42. An inquest was held on the 12th October 1920 by the Coroner for the Cheshire (Knutsford Division). The Ministry of Pensions awarded his widow a pension based on the fact she was the "widow of a Lieutenant who died of disease attributable to, or aggravated by military service". The officer had not resigned his commission and remained subject to military law up and including the date of his death. The solicitors representing him were Messrs. Vardon & Corfield, 26 Old Burlington Street, London W.1. The solicitors being Percy John Vardon and Thomas Henry Corfield. The latter was probably his brother, born Mar Qtr 1877, whereas Frederick was born Jun Qtr 1878, both in the same registration district of London. Patty never remarried and died during the Sep Qtr 1948 in the Westminster R.D. ref: 5c/300 - aged: 72. |
