His father married Elizabeth Worthington in 1892. Birth registered during the September quarter 1893 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/169, the only son of Thomas & Elizabeth Coombs (nee Worthington). Elizabeth died on the 6th June 1893 - presumably in childbirth with William. 1901 Census - 37 George Street, Altrincham. Grandson - aged: 7 - born: Altrincham. Elizabeth Coombs (his grandmother) - Widow - aged: 60 - born: High Legh. Also - Thomas Coombs (his father) - Married (Widower actually) - aged: 38 - occ: Butcher - born: Altrincham. Plus Elizabeth Coombes (his aunt) - Unmarried - aged: 34 - occ: Butcher's Assistant - born: Altrincham. 1911 Census - 37 George Street, Altrincham. Son - aged: 17 - occ: Iron Merchant Clerk - born: Altrincham. Head of household - Thomas Coombs - Married - aged: 48 - occ: Butcher Shopkeeper - born: Altrincham. Employed by Mr. Alfred Simpson, Iron & Steel Merchants, Whitworth St, Manchester. Teacher at the Downs Congregational Church Sunday School. Member of the Altrincham Wesleyan Cricket Club. Death reported in the 11/07/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Gazetted - London Gazette 19th February 1917 - page 1759. Reported in the 24/08/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian that his father had received William's Military Medal on Wednesday 22nd August 1917. Commemorated on the private family gravestone in St. Mary's, Bowdon. Grave No. 4129. M.I. - "A loved one sleeping". No M.I. on his actual headstone in France. His father, Thomas died 31/03/1924 aged 61 and his mother, Elizabeth died 06/06/1893 aged 27 years. One of the sad tregedies of war - the 21/12/1917 edtition of the local newspaper reported that his father was facing the court because after the loss of his only son, he had tried to take his own life by cutting his throat.
