Born during the December quarter 1890 in the Northwich R.D. - ref: 8a/225, the eldest son of John & Elizabeth Clarke. 1901 Census - Lower Stretton, Stretton, Cheshire. Son - aged: 10 - born: Barnton, Cheshire. Head of household - John Clarke - Married - aged: 41 - occ: Day Gardener (not Domestic) - born: Sandbach, Cheshire. Also - Elizabeth Clarke - Wife - aged: 49 - born: Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. Plus 1 younger sibling. Employed in the Testing Department at Linotype Ltd. 1911 Census - The Ridge, Jubbulpore, India. Private in 2nd Bn Cheshire Rgt. Unmarried - aged: 23 - born: Crewe, Cheshire. His parents and younger brother were at that time residing at 45 Bold Street, Altrincham. Head of household - John Clarke - Married - aged: 52 - occ: Day Gardener (not Domestic) - born: Thurlach, near Northwich, Cheshire. Also - Elizabeth Clarke - Wife - aged: 60 - born: Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. Plus his younger sibling. Enlisted in August 1914 and drafted to the front in November 1915. Previously in the 22nd Bn Manchester Rgt (Pals). Married Fanny Pilling during the December quarter 1916 in the Runcorn R.D. - ref: 8a/364. He had been in involved in many battles and had been wounded three times previously, Death reported in the 29/11/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. |
