Born during the December quarter 1894 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/728, the eldest son of Joseph Thomas & Sarah Cuthbert (nee Clarke). 1901 Census - Woodsend Road, Flixton. Son - aged: 6 - born: Flixton. Head of household - Joseph T. Cuthbert - Married - aged: 29 - occ: House Painter - born: Portsmouth, Hampshire. Also - Sarah Cuthbert - Wife - aged: 26 - born: Flixton. Plus 2 younger sisters. 1911 Census - Reformatory, Heswall cum Oldfield, Wirral. Inmate - aged: 16 - Scholar - born: Flixton. His parents were then residing at 8 Cooper Street, Stretford. His father - Joseph Thomas a 37 year old House Painter and his 36 year old mother and 6 siblings. For some years he was employed as a Steward aboard a mail boat. Enlisted 3 years ago (1913 ???) Shot through his lungs on the 1st July. He died at King George's Hospital, Lambeth, London. His death was reported in the 22/08/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Buried 18/08/1916 - Burial No. 7,728. A firing party attended from Seymore Grove (Royal Engineers' HQ). Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917 and commemorated in the Stretford Memorial Book. |
