He had spent some time in Australia and was there when his father died suddenly in 1946. A Leading Supply or Stores Assistant, having been on two weeks leave, he left home in the morning to return to his ship in the Firth of Forth. At 7.00 pm that evening his Mother received a telegram to say that he had met with an accident and was critically ill. At 8.00 pm she received the second telegram stating that he was dead. His brother and his brother in law, travelled up to Scotland the following day (Sunday).
