Born during the September quarter 1889 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref:
8a/171, the son of John & Mary Broady (nee Johnson).

1891 Census - 172 Higher Road, Urmston.    Son - aged: 1 - born: Ashton
upon Mersey.   Head of household - John Broady - Married - aged: 34 - occ:
Borough Labourer - born: Dunham Massey, Cheshire.   Also - Mary Broady -
Wife - aged: 34 - born: Flixton, Lancashire.    Plus 4 elder siblings, all
born at Ashton upon Mersey.   The family must have resided at Ashton upon
Mersey between 1878 and 1890.

1901 Census - 48 Lorne Grove, Urmston.     Son - aged: 10 - born: Ashton
upon Mersey.    Head of household - John Broady - Married - aged: 47 - occ:
Paviour - born: Ashton upon Mersey, Cheshire.   Also - Mary Broady - Wife -
aged: 44 - born: Flixton, Lancashire.    Plus 6 siblings.

His father - John Broady, died during the June quarter 1909 in the Barton
upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/407 - aged: 52.

The family later resided at 32 Poplar Grove, Urmston.

WO363 - Enlisted at Manchester into the 1st City Battalion Manchester
Regiment on the 7th September 1914, aged: 25 years 4 months.  Height: 5
feet 3½ inches - Weight: 128 lb - Expanded chest: 34½ inches with a 2
inch expansion - Complexion: Brown - Eyes: gray - Hair: Black.        
Forfieted pay for being absent from the 11th to the 17th December 1914.  
Posted to France on the 8th November 1915.   Repatriated back to England on
the 8th July 1916    Not possible to extract much information from his
records, as they are too badly burnt.

The 16th Battalion Manchester Regiment was part of the  90th Brigade, 30th
Division.   On the first day of the Battle of the Somme on the 1st July
1916, the Battalion assembled in Cambridge Copse for an attack on
Montauban.   Heavy casualties sustained from a machine gun situated in the
German line near to Breslau Alley.   They reached Train Alley and their
Lewis gun team cleared the German machine gun.   Montauban was entered at
10.05 hrs.   Moved to Happy Valley on the 2nd and to Cambridge Copse on the
9th.   James could have been wounded anytime from the 1st July to around
the 7th.

Died at the 1st Southern General Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham of wounds
received in France.

Buried 25/07/1916 - Burial No. 1,594.   Private Gravestone in Urmston Cem. 
  M.I. - "Duty nobly done".

His father, John died 03/04/1905 aged 52 years and his mother, Mary died
28/04/1936 aged 73 years.
