Born on the 15th October 1888 at 38 Bishop Street, Moss Side, during the December quarter 1888 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c**8, the son of - James Henry & Susannah Barber (nee Howarth). 1891 Census - Alma Park, Levenshulme, Manchester. Son - aged: 2 - born: Manchester. Head of household - James Barber - Married - aged: 35 - occ: Manufacturer od Children's Costumes - born: Harpurhey, Manchester. Also - Susanna Barber - Wife - aged: 34 - born: Bacup, Lancashire. Plus 33 siblings and 1 servant. 1901 Census - 100 Heaton Moor Road, Heaton Norris, Cheshire. Son - aged: 12 - born: Moss Side. Head of household - James Barber - Married - aged: 45 - occ: Manufacturer od Children's Costumes - born: Harpurhey, Manchester. Also - Susanna Barber - Wife - aged: 45 - born: Bacup, Lancashire. Plus 4 siblings and 1 servant. 1911 Census - "Belmore", Brooklands Road, Sale. Son - aged: 22 - occ: Clerk - born: Moss Side, Manchester. Head of household - James Barber - Married - aged: 55 - occ: Manufacturer od Children's Costumes - born: Harpurhey, Manchester. Also - Susanna Barber - Wife - aged: 55 - born: Bacup, Lancashire. Plus 3 siblings and 2 servants. James & Susanna had five children, all of who had survived. "Belmore" described as a 9 roomed house. Attended Manchester Grammar School. He is commemorated on their war memorial, but only on the Addenda Panel. Employed in his father's Costume Manufacturing warehouse, Fairfield St, Manchester. WO 374 states:- He enlisted as a Private in the 1/6th Bn Manchester Rgt on the 2nd September 1914. At the time of his enlistment at Manchester, he was aged: 25 years 10 months, born at Manchester and was unmarried. He had not undertaken any previous military service of any kind. He was 5 feet 11 inches in height, he weighed 160 lb and his chest measurement was 38/2½inches. He was granted a commission on the 21st May 1915. He embarked at Southampton, bound for Egypt on the 10th September 1914. His application for a commission, dated 2nd February 1915. gives his address as - Main Barracks, Abbasia, Cairo. He embarked at Alexandria for Gallipoli on the 3rd May 1915. His father as next of kin was the beneficiary of his estate valued at £273. 4. 0d Shot in stomach. Death reported in the 09/07/1915 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Commemorated on the family grave in Sale (Brooklands) Cemetery. |
