Born during the June quarter 1895 in the Fylde R.D. - ref: 8e/715, the son
of Neil Smith & Jessie Morton Barbour (nee Leigh).

1901 Census - 32 Church Street, Eccles, Lancashire.   Son - aged: 5 - born:
Lytham, Lancashire.   Head of household - Neil S. Barbour - Married - aged:
33 - occ: Bank Clerk - born: Scotland.   Also - Jessie M. Barbour - Wife -
aged: 33 - born: Manchester.   Plus 1 elder sister and a maternal aunt.

1911 Census - 4 Rivington Road, Pendleton, Saldord.    Son - aged: 15 -
Scholar - born: Lytham, Lancashire.    Head of household - Neil Smith
Barbour - Married - aged: 43 - occ: Bank Clerk - born: Dundonald, Ayrshire,
Scotland.   Also - Jessie Morton Barbour - Wife - aged: 43 - born:
Manchester.   Plus 2 siblings.

Attended Salford Technical College.  Obtained a Certificate for Wireless
Telegraphy from the City Wireless School, Thomas St, Manchester.

Served as a Wireless Telegraph Operator.

Spent a period of time on the S.S. "Fauvatte" belonging to the Steam
Navigation Company, plying between London & Boulogne.    Went to Canada
where he served with the Marconi Company of Canada.    Engaged on a boat in
Nova Scotia waters.    He next joined the S.S. "Ionian" that travelled
between Canada and the U.K.

In September 1915 he enlisted in the RNR and was delegated to the 288 ton
H.M.T. "Anthony Hope", a peacetime trawler taken over by the Royal Navy.   
Ironically, both the Fauvette and the Ionian were both later torpedoed and
sunk (Fauvette 09/03/1916 - Ionion 20/10/1917).

He was eventually killed by a Mine Explosion off Le Havre in position 0.5
miles north of the Whistle Buoy - one of only two casualties.

Death reported in the 01/12/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian

His parents later resided at 69 South Grove, Brooklands, Sale.

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917, which states
that he was a Chief Petty Officer and Wieless Operator.
