Born on the 10t January 1894, the birth being registered during the March quarter 1894 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/187, the son of William & Mary Ann Garner (nee Lewis). Baptised on the 14th February 1894 at the Wesleyan Chapel, School Road, Sale. 1901 Census - 10 King Street, Sale. Son - aged: 7 - born: Sale. Head of household - William Garner - Married - aged: 45 - occ: Blacksmith - born: Altrincham. Also Mary Ann Garner - Wife - aged: 42 - born: Quarry Bank, Cheshire. Plus 3 elder siblings. 1911 Census - 2 Rydal Mount, 27 Mersey Road, Ashton upon Mersey. Son - aged: 17 - occ: Assistant Grocer - born: Sale. Head of household - William Garner - Married - aged: 55 - occ: Blacksmith - born: Altrincham. Also Mary Ann Garner - Wife - aged: 52 - born: Quarry Bank, Cheshire. Plus 2 elder siblings. Member of the Sale Weslyan Bible Class. Employed by the Manchester & Salford Co-operative Society, Manley Rd Branch, since leaving school Enlisted in November 1914 and had been at the front for two years when he was killed. MIC - Drafted to France on the 27th September 1915 - BWM - 15 Star - Victory. He had been wounded twice previously - once with shrapnel in his knee and once with a bayonet wound in his thigh. He was dressing a wounded comrade out in the open, when he was killed by a sniper during the first day of the Battle of Polygon Wood. Death reported in the 26/10/1017 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Commemorated on the family gravestone in Sale Cemetery - A.479. His father William died 06/07/1937 aged 82 years and his mother died 04/01/1924 aged 65 years. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1918. |
