As a Pilot, he was on a patrol over France on the 7th June 1940 and landed at Rouen-Boos with a burst tyre, but managed to return to RAF Tangmere the following day. Flying with 43 Squadron - a Hurricane P 3531 - at 17.15 hrs, off Selsey, West Sussex, he was shot down in combat by Fw Lehmann in a Bf109s of III/JG 27.
