Trafford

Born on the 18th March 1923, the birth being registered during the June
quarter 1923 in the Grimsbyy R.D. - ref: 7a/1002, the son of Fred & Frances
Ann Burn (nee Fawcett).

Attended the Lincoln City School and Altrincham Grammar School.  A choirboy
at St. Martin's Church, Ashton on Mersey.

1939 National Registration - 6 Ollerton Avenue, Sale.   Fred Burn - Married
- born on the 4th February 1893 - occ: Railway Clerk.   Frances A. Burn -
Married - born on the 3rd January 1898 - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties.  
John F. Burn - Single - born on the 18th March 1923 - At School.   Iris B.
Burn (Barr) - Single - born on the 26th August 1926 - At School.

Joined the Metro-Vicker's Company as a Cost Clerk in December 1939 and
employed in the Cost Department.    Joined the Royal Tank Rgt, R.A.C. in
April 1942 and later posted to the Central Mediterranean Forces in North
Africa.  Involved in the Second Battle of Ruweisat Ridge (El Mreir), part
of the First Battle of El Alemein (1st - 27th July 1942) where they ran
into an unmarked minefield and lost heavily.   Also took part in the Second
Battle of El Alemein (23rd October - 11th November 1942).   Jack was then
involved in Operation 'Husky' - the invasion of Sicily and Italy, landing
at Paccino on the south-east coast of Sicily in July 1943.   In late
January 1944, he was part of the force that landed behind enemy lines at
Anzio where he was killed - two weeks before his 21st birthday.

Also commemorated on a pair of wooden candle stands at the rear of the
Altar in St. Martin's Church.
