After covering the passage of the B.E.F. to France, Aircraft Carrier - HMS Courageous was employed in anti-submarine operations in the Western Approaches. At 19.50 hrs on the 17th September 1939, just as the ship was was turning into the wind to recover aircraft, she was torpedoed on the port side by U-Boat, U-29, commanded by Otto Schuhardt. The attack took place south west of Ireland in position - 50.10 N, 14.45 W. Damage control parties were unable to stem the flooding and 5 minutes after the torpedo struck, the order to abandon ship was given and sank 10 minutes after that. Of the 1260 officers and men onboard, 519 men were lost. |
