Born during the September quarter 1893 at Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/166,
the son of Frederick William & Elizabeth Bayley (nee Thomas).

WO 363 - Enlisted into the 10th Bn Cheshire Regiment (No. 15890) at
Knutsford on the 3rd September 1914.   He was aged: 21 and employed as a
Clerk.   He was 5 feet 8 1/2 inches in height, and weighed 9 stone 7 lb. 
His chest measurements were 31 to 33 expanded.  He had a Fair complexion,
Dark Brown eyes and Dark hair.   Whilst stationed at Bournemouth, he was
disciplined on the 9th December 1914 for "Persistently refusing to obey an
order" for which he was deducted 2 days pay.   In order to serve with his
elder brother Fred Bayley, he transferred to the 17th Bn Manchester Rgt on
the 9th March 1915.   Whilst stationed at Manchester, he was disciplined
for "Being late in falling in when on the march", for which he was given 7
days C.B (Confined to Barracks).     Whilst stationed at Larkhill, he was
disciplined for "Overstaying his pass from 12 pm until 10.10 pm on the 20th
October 1915, for which he had 7 days pay deducted.

Posted to France on the 7th November 1915 and embarked at Folkestone on the
8th.   Whilst "In the Field", for "Falling out from fatigue without
permission", on the 5th March 1916 - no punishment stated.   Whist at
Montauban, Somme, on the 1st July, he was disciplined for "??????? at Duty"
(Cannot decipher).

His brother wrote home and explained what had happened to Lionel.  He had
dug himself into a trench during a shell barrage, when a shell landed close
by killing five, including the sergeant and wounded him and another.   He
did not know where the wounded Lionel had been taken.   Lionel died of his
wounds at the No. 45 Casualty Clearing Station.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in S.S. Wilfred & Mary Church
Yard, Mobberley.

His father - Frederick William Bayley died on the 19th October 1927, aged:
66 years and his mother - Elizabeth Bayley died on the 3rd October 1930,
aged: 69 years.
