The "Rio Azul" was built in 1921, it's gross register tonnage was 4,088, it
was 363 feet long, 53 feet wide and could make 11 knots.
A cargo ship, it was one of 4 ships operated by the Thompson Steasmshipping
Co. Ltd, 50-51 Lime Street, London EC3.

In the Atlantic, 200 miles SE of the Azores, travelling from Pepel to the
Middlesborough, UK via Freetown, with a cargo of 6,700 tons of iron ore,
she was torpedoed by U-123, whilst in convoy SL76, comprising 60 ships and
sank in position - 29.00N 25.00W.   There were 9 survivors, who were
rescued by H.M. armed merchant cruiser "Esperance Bay and landed at Scapa
Flow, Orkneys, but 33 crew/passengers were lost.

Confirmed as dead in 03/07/42 edition of the local newspaper.
