Born during the December quarter 1921 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/1175,
the son of Victor Stanley & May Florence Burtt (nee Tucker).

Wireless Operator/Air Gunner.  Sale F.C. centenary book states that he was
a pilot.

Flying with 15 Sqn, they took off at 20.45hrs from R.A.F. Bourn, in a
Stirling Mk.1, No. BF327 LS-D on a bombing operation to Kassel. They were
shot down by a night-fighter and crashed at Beusichem in the Gelderland, on
the south bank of the River Lek, 28 miles WSW of Ede, Holland. Total losses
7 crew, all buried at Amersfoot Cemetery.

Marcus is commemorated on the Sale Town War Memorial and the Sale Football
Club WW2 Memorial (Sale RUFC).

306 aircraft took part in this raid.  31 aircraft were lost - 21
Wellingtons, 5 Stirlings, 3 Lancasters, 1 Halifax and 1 Hampden. With very
little cloud cover the Pathfinders were able to illuminate the target well
and widespread damage was caused, particularly in the south-western parts
of the city. 144 buildings were destroyed and 317 serously damaged. Several
military establishments were hit, with 28 soldiers killed and 15 civilians.
 64 soldiers and 187 civilians were injured. There were 73 large fires -
the Henschel aircraft company was hit and the private wing of the local
hospital.
