Born during the September quarter 1890 in the Altrincham R.D. – ref: 8a/
201, the son of Joseph & Sarah Ackerley (nee Hampson).  In 1881, they were
residing at Scoggin Lane, Partington and were both employed as Fustian
Cutters – a rather unpleasant occupation.

1891 Census – Carrington.   Son – aged: 7 months – born: Carrington,
Cheshire.    Head of household - Joseph Ackerley – Married – aged: 37
– occ: Clerk, Book-keeper – born: Partington, Cheshire.   Also –
Sarah Ackerley – Wife – aged: 34 – born: Warburton, Cheshire.  Plus 5
elder siblings.

1901 Census – 577, Liverpool Road, Irlam.    Son – aged: 10 – born:
Carrington, Cheshire.    Head of household – Joseph Ackerley – Married
– aged: 47 – occ: Hairdresser & Stationery Shop – born: Partington,
Cheshire.   Also – Sarah Ackerley – Wife – aged: 44 – born:
Warburton, Cheshire.  Plus 8 siblings.

1911 Census – 579 Liverpool Road, Irlam.   Son – aged: 20 – occ: Box
Maker at Soap Works – born: Carrington, Cheshire.   Head of household –
Sarah Ackerley – Widow – aged: 54 – born: Warburton, Cheshire.  Plus
– 7 siblings.

The 11th (Service) Battalion, The Manchester Regiment served with the 34th
Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division.

I am most grateful to Neil Drum & Pete Thomas for allowing me to use
verbatim the following extract from their superb 623 page book "A District
at War - Irlam & Cadishead's Part in the Great War", an incredibly detailed
and comprehensive book that is not only a credit to them, but a magnificent
memorial to the WW1 men of that district.

He was born in Carrington c. 1891, the son of Joseph and Sarah Ackerley. 
His brothers and sisters were: Thomas H.(b: Pendleton c. 1878), Arthur (b:
Partington c. 1881), Frank Ackerley (b: Partington c. 1886), Fred (b:
Partington c. 1888), Hugh (b: Carrington 1894), Agnes (b: Carrington c.
1896), Tally (b: Carrington c. 1898) and James (b: Irlam c. 1900).  The
family moved to Irlam sometime between 1898 and 1900 and resided at 577
Liverpool Road, Irlam.  By 1914 the family was residing at 579 Liverpool
Road, Irlam.  Before the war he worked at the CWS Soap Works as a box-maker
and was a regular attender at Irlam Parish Church.  He was one of a number
of CWS employees who enlisted in Manchester with the 11th Battalion in
November 1914.  He enlisted, along with a number of local men in November
1914. The 11th Battalion disembarked at Gallipoli on 14th July 1915 and on
6th August they took part in the assault landings at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli.

His obituary described him as a fine type of British soldier.    Medal
Entitlement: 15 Star Trio.   His younger brother, Hugh, served with the 7th
Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment.
